There are various databases available for academic users to do their own online literature searching for full-text articles, or references to periodical articles or books to help them in their research. These include:

ERIC, Academic Search Premier, Newspaper Source EBSCO link a full-text version of ERIC is accessible through the EBSCO service: provides access to information from journals included in the Current Index of Journals in Education and Resources in Education Index. ERIC provides full text of more than 2,200 digests along with references for additional information and citations and abstracts from over 1000 educational and education-related journals. EISZ
JSTOR (Trusted archives for scholarship) JSTOR link JSTOR offers a high-quality, interdisciplinary digital archive to support scholarship and teaching. It includes archives of over one thousand leading academic journals across the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, as well as select monographs and other materials valuable for academic work. The entire corpus is full-text searchable, offers search term highlighting, includes high-quality images, and is interlinked by millions of citations and references. EISZ
Literature Resource Center+MLA Bibliography LRC link provides direct access to biographies, bibliographies and critical analysis of authors from every age and literary discipline in a single Internet-searchable service, including the Contemporary Authors and Dictionary of Literary Biography databases, full-text criticism from the Contemporary Literary Criticism Select database, and the MLA International Bibliography. World Biographical Information System WBIS link
World Biographical Information System Online (WBIS Online) is the most comprehensive biographical database available. Based on the digitization of K. G. Saur's Biographical Archives, it compiles biographical articles from printed reference works published from the 16th to the 21st century, and reproduces these original documents as facsimile images on the screen. Thus, WBIS Online features biographical profiles of people from all centuries as well as all countries and regions worldwide. In addition to 8.5 million digitized biographical articles, the WBIS Online database currently provides an index to 57 Biographical Archives totalling short biographies on more than 6 million people.

EBSCO Discovery Service

January 16-July 16, 2012 Fast, simple access to all of ELTE's library collections (electronic and print) including: subscription-based foreign journals with access to articles; databases; library catalog (WebOPAC), the latter only from February 15, 2012. Currently available in Hungarian only.

Literature Online

November 4-December 16, 2011 Literature Online is the leading online resource for the study and teaching of literature in English. It is a fully integrated service that combines the texts of over 350,000 works of literature with huge resources of criticism and reference. When combined with the MLA International Bibliography add-on module, Literature Online is the only resource which offers single-point searching of the two leading literary indexes, MLA and ABELL, linked to a growing collection of 150 full-text literary journals. They're the perfect complement.

OED Online January 27-February 28, 2011 UPDATED: The Oxford English Dictionary is widely acknowledged to be the most authoritative and comprehensive record of the English language in the world, tracing the evolution and use of more than 600,000 words through 3 million quotations. Dissertations and Theses
until December 31, 2009 ProQuest Central is the largest aggregated full-text database in the market today totaling more than 12,665 titles—with over 9,745 titles in full text. It boasts over 160 subjects including core subject areas such as:
Business and economics, Health and medical, News and world affairs, Science, Education, Technology, Humanities, Social Sciences, Psychology, Literature, Law, Women's studies. Coverage: 1905-present.

While ProQuest Central provides access to millions of much-coveted full text articles from thousands of scholarly journals, it also provides access to information not available in other aggregated resources such as:

  • Over 880 full text U.S., Canadian and international newspapers including exclusive access to the full text of The Wall Street Journal and Los Angeles Times
  • Nearly 30,000 full text dissertations in the areas of business, psychology, physical sciences, health, education and more.
OED Online until October 31, 2009 The OED:

Reference Global until October 31, 2009 Walter de Gruyter is among the first academic publishers in the world to provide electronic access to its journals, books, and databases on a single platform. Subjects covered: History, Art and Music, Literary Studies, Philosophy, Linguistics and Communications, Social Sciences and Economics. First digitization project realized: The more than 60 volumes of the "Handbooks of Linguistics and Communication Science (HSK)".
EBSCO A-to-Z until July 21, 2009 EBSCO A-to-Z® is a locator tool listing all of a library's e-resources, including e-journals, titles in full-text databases, publisher packages and e-books.
Literature Resource Center+MLA January 9-March 20, 2009 provides direct access to biographies, bibliographies and critical analysis of authors from every age and literary discipline in a single Internet-searchable service, including the Contemporary Authors and Dictionary of Literary Biography databases, full-text criticism from the Contemporary Literary Criticism Select database, and the MLA International Bibliography. Web of Knowledge until December 31, 2008 Selected databases in the social sciences inlude the following:

ISI Proceedings: The Social Sciences & Humanities edition provides access to bibliographic information and author abstracts from papers delivered at prestigious international conferences in the social sciences and humanities. Fields covered include psychology, sociology, public health, management, economics, art, history, literature, and philosophy.

Journal Citation Reports is a comprehensive and unique resource that allows you to evaluate and compare journals using citation data drawn from over 7,500 scholarly and technical journals from more than 3,300 publishers in over 60 countries. It is the only source of citation data on journals, and includes virtually all areas of science, technology, and social sciences.

The Times Digital Archive 1785-1985 until May 3, 2004 Researchers can search through the complete digital edition of The Times (London), using keyword searching and hit-term highlighting to retrieve full facsimile images of either a specific article or a complete page. TLS Centenary Archive until July 12, 2003 The Centenary Archive provides online the full text of the TLS from 1902 to 1990, with the identities of hitherto anonymous reviewers revealed for the first time. Off-campus access

ELTE subscribes to several licensed web resources which provide access to thousands of journals and other research materials in the humanities. Through these services you can access full-text articles, CD-ROMs and dictionaries, among other things. Off-campus access to these web resources is now also available to ELTE students, using the authenticated proxy service called Stunnel.

Username and password to the Virtual Private Network (VPN) for more sophisticated access to online databases from home can be obtained by ELTE faculty and PhD students through the ELTE IT Department's gateway. Details and terms of use (in Hungarian only) are available at VPN szolgáltatás. A similar service called Stunnel can be used by students with their caesar ID. WiFi

Username and password to the wireless access at designated areas of the Trefort and Lágymányos campuses (such as libraries, common rooms and halls) can be obtained through the ELTE IT Department's gateway. Details are available at ELTENET WiFi szolgáltatás (in Hungarian) and at Need help with Wifi? (in English). International students can either go to Ügyfélkapu and click on the British flag to access the ELTE Electronic Administration Service directly, or use the EDUROAM WiFi network if their home institution is a member of EDUROAM (a secure international Education Roaming service).


CD-ROMs

CD-ROMs held in the SEAS Library
The Library subscribes to various databases in CD-ROM format, covering different subject areas. The bibliographic databases will help you to find references to monographs (see Library of Congress CDMARC Bibliographic) and periodical articles (such as the National Periodical Database=Nemzeti Periodika Adatbázis). There are also some fulltext databases (dictionaries, encyclopedias).
